The area that is known as Calcutta or Kolkata today, used to be a collection of villages around a vibrant market trading in bales of cotton, saltpeter, and salt. this market attracted traders from a wide range of trading communities including the Portuguese, English, Dutch, French, Armenians, Jews, Muslims and Marwaris. When Calcutta was formally founded in the 1690s and later consolidated to become the Second City of the British Empire (after London), people from all of these communities made Calcutta their home. Their rich contributions in economy, culture, and architecture of the city made Calcutta a true melting pot of cultures. In this walking tour through the traditional commercial district of Calcutta, we will explore this unique multicultural flavour of the city.
